What are Milled Edge Coin variants actually.... ??

Security Edge ?? Milled Edge ??

Most of the coin collecter have a doubt regarding milled/reeded edge variants for security edge high value coins... Are these deliberately minted ? If yes then how come a coin has partial milled edge and partial security edge ?? Or are these coins some sort of error coins ? And if error why are they listed as variants in Krause Catalog as varaints.... ??

Here is a article which might help u gets your doubt clarified :

Normally high value coins are produced with a 'Security edge' like Rs.2 coins in before 1990s and Rs.5(normal and commemorative) coins till 2008. This is done to check counterfeiting(making fake coins) of coins. Coins having 'security edge' are first struck with the usual upright milling at the time the obverse and reverse designs are impressed upon them same as the edge of milled coins shown in this article . These are next passed through a second press, where the security mark is put on the edge, under pressure.

But, while being fed into the second machine, if a few coins accidentally skip the press, these may go to circulation with normal upright milled edge or if get pressed partially they lead to partial security edge and rest milled.
Thus we find another type of error in coin specimens with upright milling which should have a 'security edge'.
These are milled edge or partial security edge variants of such coins.

Then the question comes why these are not categorized as error
coins even when they are actually error coins. The only reason for this is that the number of such error coins having milled edge is large as compared to any other kind of error coins which makes them a variant rather than a error coin.

History of Security Edge... how the term was coined ??

In olden days the coin was fed manually and the impression was hammered.The coins was made of silver and unprincipled persons used to shave the coin near the edges to steal part of the silver. Hence when automatic machine minting came in to use, A security edge was implemented around the circumference thereby proving that the coin had not been tampered with and the weight of the coin remained the same as per the minted coin. Hence this impression around the edges was called security there by securing the actual weight of the coin.

Note : Not all Milled edge coins are error coins. Recent rs.5 Ni-Br coins 2009 onwards and olden days silver coins had milled edges only.

Dear Friend, Thank you for visiting my blog. I have been collecting coins and bank notes of India and other countries from my child hood days.... which gained momentum after 2005.. At that time, I had no internet access , what to speak of internet, even no reference books on coin collection were available with me. I simply collected coins from circulation, choosing only by different designs and photos, then I started collecting for different years and then different mints...then different countries...

I gained a good knowledge about the science of coin collection after I browsed through Internet about coins and some idea from my uncle.

As I am a engineer by profession, I wished to share my knowledge about coins with my fellow collectors and I presume that I have achieved my aim to some extent by starting this blog. NUMISMATICS IS AN UPCOMING FIELD FOR RESEARCH IN INDIAN HISTORY AND THERE IS HUGE BURGEONING MARKET IN TRADING OF INDIAN COINS BOTH NATIONALLY AND INTERNATIONALLY.

All those who collect coins know it quite well that the hobby is good, but most of the time parents or friends do not approve as they think its a waste of time and money. Well, now we are having a formal course for numismatics which can help you to study coin history and also can be used as a stepping stone to make a career in numismatics.

The University of Mumbai conducts the MA (Numismatics & Archaeology) programme (Click here for details) through the Dinesh Mody Institute of Numismatics & Archaeology (Address : Dinesh Mody Institute for Numismatics & Archaeology, Saroj Sadan, Kalina Campus,Santacurz (E), Mumbai – 400 098. (I.C. 60)) with three batches of numismatists out in the field. The two-year program is conducted on the premises of the institute along with the Dinesh Mody Numismatic Museum, which was established by Dinesh Mody, a senior Mumbai based advocate and eminent numismatist with large collections of Indian and world coins.

“Numismatics is an upcoming field for research in Indian history and there is huge burgeoning market in trading of Indian coins both nationally and internationally. Thus, the students can expect to be absorbed by the increasing number of auction houses for coins as resource persons and by the numerous museums both in India and abroad that require expert numismatists to catalogue their collections of Indian coins. Additionally, students can pursue their doctorates in the field to churn out original research content in this yet unexplored system of historiography,” says Mahesh Kalra, Assistant Director and Curator, DMINA.

The syllabus of the course ambitiously covers the entire gamut of Indian coinage right from the ancient Punchmarked coins of the pre-Buddhist era (8th-6th century BC) to coins of various Indian dynasties like Guptas, Kushans, Satavahanas, Cholas, Pandyas, Vijayanagara empire, the Delhi Sultanate, the Mughals and the British till the latest coins minted by the Republic of India covering the history of a period of 2500 years! In addition, the students are encouraged to learn numerous scripts ranging from the oldest Indian scripts, Ashokan Brahmi and Kharosthi to Nagari (the precursor of Devanagari) to Greek, Arabic and Persian as Indian coins are inscribed in these indigenous and foreign scripts. Lastly, the students are instructed about the basics of Archaeology, its methodology and various findings to give them an idea of how the various coin hoards are discovered dTuring archaeological excavations conducted throughout the country.

The in-house museum and the institute, spread over a sprawling 15,000 sq. ft. area, are located at the Saroj Sadan in the heart of the Kalina campus of University of Mumbai.

The course also opens avenues for a host of foreign scholarships at foreign institutions with collections of Indian coins such as the British Museum, Fitzwilliam Museum (Cambridge University), Ashmolean Museum (Oxford University), among others.

I would say that the world is slowly but surely waking up to the juggernaut of numismatics. Anyone can close their eyes and say that only you can be stupid enough to buy 2 rs in 2000rs, but the potential of collection, investment or research in this field is enormous, and nobody can manage to stay in the dark if the sun is shining brightly.

Euro coins incorporate high-security machine-readable characteristics. They can be used in vending machines throughout the euro area - no matter where they were issued.

Sophisticated bi-metal and sandwich technologies have been incorporated into the €1 and €2 coins.
The material of the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins is a unique alloy (Nordic gold), which is difficult to melt and used exclusively for coins.

Lettering around the edge of the €2 coin and the use of a unique metal composition for the 10, 20 and 50 cent coins protects them against counterfeiting.

This error was due to use of damaged die to mint coins by Kolkatta Mint.

Non error version of 1968 10 paise coins also available.

There are three types of the crown, which is on the obverse at the top. These are shown below and are designated as (RC) Round Crown, (HC) High Crown, and (FC) Flat Crown. Calcutta Mint issues have no mint mark. The issues from the other mints have the mint mark below the date as following: Lahore, raised “L”; Pretoria, small round dot; Mumbai (Bombay), diamond dot or “large” round dot. On the Mumbai (Bombay) issues dated 1944 the mint mark appears to be a large dot over a diamond.

Piedfort Coins

A Piedfort or piedforte (misspelled as piefort in the influential Krause and Mishler Standard Catalog of World Coins), is a coin often exactly twice its normal specifications like weight and thickness. The name is derived from a French word , meaning "heavy foot". They are normally not circulated, and only struck for presentation purposes by mint officials for collectors or VIPs or available in Proof set of Coins.

Great Britain's Royal Mint is well known for creating many commemorative piedfort coins, especially since the 1980s.

Not many such kind of coins have been minted in India.

As per Standard Catalog of World Coins , Krause Publicaiton only one such coin was minted in India, whose detail are as follow :

KM# 277 -- 100 RUPEES

29.1600 gm, 0.9250 Silver 0.8672 oz.

ASW Series: International Year of the Child

Obv: Asoka lion pedestal, denomination below

Rev: Native musicians and dancer

Minted in year 1981 as Proof Coin by Mumbai Mint.

1996 Rs.5 IRON COIN (Rusted)

Above is the image of Rs.5 rusted coin. It has been minted in year 1996(properly not visible in image).

Is this coin fake or genuine ?? as once I saw a person selling similar IRON rs.5 coin of year 1996 on eBay claiming that this coin was minted by mistake in iron by government mint.

Maharana Pratap Die Rotation Error Coin

Recently I found one Maharana Pratap Mumbai Mint Die rotation Error Coin. It had some 15 degree rotation in the central axis of front and back faces.

Can anyone verify this error or all Maharana Pratap Coins were minted in this way only(i.e. with rotation error)

What could be the value for this coin ?

I found one Rs.5 coin of 1999 Hyderabad Mint with unusual security edge... similar to the one found in Rs.1 coins of 1992... Is this a variant or error or what ?

Do any one got any idea about it ?

5 rupee Variants and some doubts

Above are some 5 rupee coins minted in the year 2009 by various mints...

---*--- First and second coins are minted in Hyderabad mint with different fonts.. clearly visible in above image..(see the digit '9' in '2009').. can any one tell if its some variant coin or error coin ?

---*--- third and sixth are Kolkata mint coins with difference in printing.. in 3rd coin all prints are more sharper.. where as in sixh coin all images and text have very smooth and blurred kind of edge as clearly visible..

can any one tell if its some sort of error or what ? its not double strike error for sure..

---*--- fifth coin is a off-center non planer error coin of kolkata mint with same smooth printing as of 6th image.

--*--- forth is a mumbai mint coin

Can anyone tell me if Nodia mint printed these coins ? and did any other mint also printed the same ? Is ther any more varity in these coins in 2009 ??

Also can anyone tell me if the coin was minted in any other material other than Brass ? was any Cu-Ni version minted ?

Is the sixth coin in the image made of Cu-Ni ?? How to find it out ?
